Do genes evolve?

Answer: Genes evolve. Genes are tiny bits of DNA that code for proteins. The gene’s major job is to store information needed to make certain proteins in an organism. They also carry instructions for specific traits including skin, eye, and hair colour. An individual has approximately 20,000 genes that code for everything from structural proteins in our hair to muscle fibres in our toes. Most genes are DNA-based and inherited from our parents.

Gene Evolution

New genes have evolved throughout the history of life on Earth. Humans have more genes with more functions than any other species. New genes are genes that have evolved in the relevant evolutionary timescale. Two primary methods generate new genes:

  • Gene Duplication
  • de novo Genes
