(01) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–PhD position within the project ‘Libraries as Links in Learning: Making the Meaning of Manuscripts’

This project examines the fate of Western medieval manuscript collections within the context of library professionalisation in the nineteenth century. It investigates how libraries mediated and facilitated knowledge exchange around the manuscript, in a context in which the Middle Ages were both a subject of scholarship and an inspiration for nation building. It queries the role played by libraries in constructing the medieval manuscript as a subject of material as well as textual study – as a powerful signifier of institutional intellectual capital – but also as a fragile and non-fungible object, monetarily valuable and collectable. By positioning libraries as a nexus of scholarly exchange, we interrogate their role in abstract processes such the canonisation of textual carriers, while recognising the material realities inherent in preserving and making accessible the manuscripts themselves. The project investigates the abstract and actual position of medieval manuscript collections within one context –Leiden’s University Library – focusing on the use and curatorship of the Western medieval manuscript collections in the Library from c. 1819 to c. 1939.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Position on Understanding the Global Movement for Open Research Information

The purpose of this position is to produce original PhD research that contributes to the goals of the CWTS strategic Focal Area on Information and Openness. The research will entail:

  • Developing a theoretically-informed social science account of this emerging reform agenda.
  • Mapping, explaining and/or evaluating the contemporary open research information landscape.
  • Surfacing opportunities, challenges and frictions in attempts to challenge closed, proprietary forms of research information ownership and control.
  • Empirically exploring what it means in practice to promote and implement broad values such as openness, transparency, inclusiveness, and community ownership of information.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD candidate: HiTaL: High Throughput Anisotropic Lithography

We will use low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM) as well as other advanced techniques (AFM, XPS, optical spectroscopy) to systematically address the problem, making use of expertise built up in previous collaborations.[1-3] LEEM allows us to irradiate a resist layer with electrons of a well-defined energy in the range 0-95 eV, i.e. any possible electron energy generated by an EUV photon. Our goal is to measure, understand and control the dynamics of the interaction of the electrons with the resist layers. This knowledge should not only lead to scientific publications, but also to novel alleys on how to improve the efficiency, definition and hence throughput of EUV lithography.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Candidate in Social Norms and Gender Inequalities in the Labour Market (0.8-1.0 fte)

Despite efforts to close gender gaps in the labour market, they remain pervasive. In the Netherlands in 2021, women, compared to men, are 7 percentage points (pp) less likely to be in the labour force, 43pp more likely to be in part-time employment and earn 13% lower hourly wages (Statistics Netherlands, 2024). Why are these gender inequalities, causing economic inefficiency due to misallocation of female talent, so persistent? Parenthood is a primary driver, explained by traditional gender roles that refer to the gendered division of household production and labour-market production. Explanations for why family policies (childcare, parental leave) had little impact and why gender gaps persist relate to the importance of the slow-moving changes in gender and social norms. Currently, mechanisms underlying how and where social norms and gender inequalities in the labour market change are poorly understood. The main aim of this project is to fill this knowledge gap using quantitative research methods on administrative data from Statistics Netherlands and (experimental) survey data for (European) countries.

PhD position summary/title:–2 PhD Candidates, Reinforcement Learning for Sustainable Energy

These positions are embedded in the Reinforcement Learning Lab for Sustainable Energy, a cooperation between Leiden University and an industrial partner. The global energy transition is one of the key challenges that our world faces. At the same time, reinforcement learning is a key technology in artificial intelligence and machine learning that set various state-of-the-art results. In the Reinforcement Learning Lab for Sustainable Energy, researchers from academia and industry develop, implement and evaluate new deep reinforcement learning methodology to solve sustainable energy challenges.

There are two open positions: one with a more applied touch, where you will focus on real-world data and sustainability challenges, and one more theoretical/algorithmic position, where the focus will lie on novel reinforcement learning methodology.

(06) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Candidate in Economics (0.8-1.0 fte)

Public policy aims to improve the broad economic well-being of citizens and, in doing so, adheres to the principle of horizontal economic equality: citizens with equal needs and circumstances should be treated equally. The implementation of public policy often rests on the shoulders of professionals, who make decisions on the public services provided to citizens. From caseworkers determining eligibility for social policy programs to judges deciding on sentences, these professionals typically have discretion to tailor treatment to the specific circumstances of individual citizens and, hence, affect their socioeconomic outcomes. Prior research has shown significant variability in the utilization of this discretionary space among professionals, which not only violates the principle of horizontal equality but also yields substantial (unintended) effects on socioeconomic outcomes.

The aim of this research project is twofold. Firstly, this project provides more insight into the role and determinants of the variation in professionals’ decisions within public policy. Secondly, this project gains insight into the direct and indirect socioeconomic effects stemming from this variation, and thereby shedding light on the impact of public policy.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD candidate in Responsible Research Methods (1.0 FTE)

The scientific record is a continuously updating source of knowledge, and it is often assumed that scientific fields have self-correction mechanisms that ensure the integrity of this record. It is becoming increasingly obvious that most error correction mechanisms have costs (e.g., they take time and effort), and can only be applied to a small subset of the (psychology) literature. This makes it all the more important to evaluate the impact of such efforts, and to direct efforts where the most value can be gained. In other words, there is a need for metascientific work on the self-correcting ability of psychological science, and the academic transition to a culture that fosters this self-correction through open, collaborative, value-driven, and responsible scientific processes. For instance, how do researchers change their beliefs about a claim when it is corrected in one way or another? And is this change reflected in the literature through for instance the way researchers collectively cite the updated claims?

About Leiden University, Netherlands : Official Website

Leiden University (abbreviated as LEI;Dutch: Universiteit Leiden) is a public research university in Leiden, Netherlands. It was founded as a Protestant university in 1575 by William, Prince of Orange, making it the oldest institution of higher education in the Netherlands.

Known for its historic foundations and emphasis on the social sciences, the university came into particular prominence during the Dutch Golden Age, when scholars from around Europe were attracted to the Dutch Republic due to its climate of intellectual tolerance. During this time, Leiden became the home to individuals such as René Descartes, Rembrandt, Christiaan Huygens, Hugo Grotius, Baruch Spinoza, and Baron d’Holbach.

The university has seven academic faculties and over fifty subject departments, housing more than forty national and international research institutes. Its historical primary campus consists of buildings in multiple places in the college town of Leiden, while a second campus located in The Hague houses a liberal arts college (Leiden University College The Hague) and several of its faculties. It is a member of the Coimbra Group, the Europaeum, and a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.

The university has produced twenty-six Spinoza Prize Laureates and sixteen Nobel Laureates. Members of the Dutch royal family such as Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix, and King Willem-Alexander are alumni, and ten prime ministers of the Netherlands including incumbent Mark Rutte. US President John Quincy Adams also studied at the university.
