(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoc position Nuclear-Renewable Hybrid Energy Systems

This project deals with dual- or multi-purpose use and integration of nuclear technology into the energy system. The research is prompted by 1) current ideas to produce hydrogen gas through electrolysis of water by using wind and solar power and 2) the vast potential of using nuclear power technology for producing hydrogen gas or only heat. Combined thermal splitting and electrolysis is another emerging technology which may develop into a competitive technology if based on SMRs. On the other hand, it should be noted that gas-cooled fast reactors, with their high operating temperatures, are well-suited for thermally splitting water into its constituents with potentially an extremely high efficiency. These developments are likely to have a significant impact on the future energy system and the Centre will investigate the nuclear component in such technologies. The project will provide competence development for young researchers that will allow them to fulfill roles as either future TSO (Technical Support Organisation) personnel that will be required for transition from the current nuclear power plant fleet to a future fleet including or based on SMR technology, or as experts within Swedish nuclear industry. The objective is furthermore to assemble and provide to other Centre projects key design features for further developments.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoc position, Oxyhydrides for Catalytic CO2 utilization and Selective Hydrogenations

This research project aligns with the contemporary movement towards greener processes for production of chemicals. The overall aim is to establish correlations between synthesis and structure of oxyhydride materials as well as their catalytic function for hydrogenation of CO2 into useful oxygenates and chemoselective hydrogenation of hydrocarbons. The project is organised as a twin post-doctoral project, i.e., two postdoc positions with close connection. The first position is focused on synthesis and characterization of oxyhydrides, and determination of catalytic properties. You will outline synthesis protocols for preparation of systematically varied material compositions, carry out basic characterization of general physicochemical properties, and test their catalytic function(s) using chemical flow-reactors. In addition, in situ and operando infrared spectroscopy will be used to understand their catalytic function(s) in detail. The second position is focused on exploring hydrogen dynamics of the synthesised materials. You will investigate the nature and local structure and hydride-ion dynamics using neutron scattering techniques (in particular, inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering).

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoc position in Machine learning for nuclear reactor core monitoring

A 3-year postdoctoral position is offered in the group ‘reactor physics, modeling and safety‘. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the study of a new generation of neutron noise-based techniques for light water reactors monitoring and diagnostics. Reactor neutron noise consists of small, stationary fluctuations of the neutron flux in the core, and it is induced by different physical phenomena such as mechanical vibrations of core components and perturbations of the coolant flow. The analysis of reactor neutron noise allows to identify anomalies that might become a concern for the operations and the safety of the reactor. In this project, artificial neural networks will be investigated to characterize anomalies from their effect on the reactor neutron noise. The models will be assessed using experiments carried out in a research reactor with well-annotated neutron noise sources. For the training of the artificial neural networks, synthetic datasets will be generated with high-order and low-order computational tools and the impact of modeling approximations will be explored and quantified. The outcome of the project will be important for the development and consolidation of trustworthy methods that can be applied to detect issues in nuclear power reactors and thus support more efficient and safer operations.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoc in computational multi-scale modelling for H2-applications

Before introducing hydrogen into the transport sector on a large scale, several complicated challenges need to be solved. Interestingly, these challenges are mostly positioned at the intersection between materials science and fluid dynamics. For example, both improvement of existing materials and better control of mass transfer and two-phase flow will be needed to move far beyond the present status concerning activity and storage for fuel cells. In the case of sensing, there exists a number of characteristics of sensors that are limited by the available materials. At the same time, it is well known that mass transfer phenomena may control the detection rates and influence the lifetime of sensors. In this project, we aim to develop a computational multi-scale platform that can easily integrate theoretical methods for flow, chemistry, and materials science. Such a platform can also connect with existing databases when searching for new or improved materials and optimizing reactors. We will build a computational platform in which theoretical tools, such as quantum mechanics and flow calculations, are combined to enable direct comparisons with experimental results concerning fuel cell performance and hydrogen storage/sensing. As a Postdoctoral Researcher in this project, you will be working at the Division of Fluid Dynamics at Chalmers University of Technology. The project is carried out in close cooperation with the Division of Chemical Physics. Working as a Postdoctoral Researcher requires a great deal of creativity and ability to think “outside the box”. Furthermore, as the current project is rather interdisciplinary, collaborative and communicative skills will be essential.

(15) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow in communications and coding for channels with memory

Our modern society depends entirely on global networks for high-capacity data communications, in which almost all data is carried by optical fibers. The physical layer algorithms in such communication systems are traditionally optimized for transmitting bit streams and are not optimal for modern packet-oriented applications. The aim of this project is to bridge this gap by designing innovative coding and decoding algorithms, inspired by a similar paradigm shift in wireless communications. The project is led by Professor Erik Agrell (IEEE Fellow) and funding is provided by a prestigious grant from the Swedish Research Council. The research will be carried out in collaboration with a well-known research group at the University of Toronto, Canada.

(19) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoc position on hydrogen-based reduction of iron oxides in fluidized bed

The post-doc position has a focus on investigating key underlying mechanisms governing the redox cycles of iron powder under fluidized bed conditions and with H2 as reducing agent. In-deep understanding of the implications of using H2 as reducing agent plays a key role in the transition of the iron and steel industry towards carbon neutrality. Likewise, such seeked knowledge would enhance the development of commercial applications needed in the transformation of other sectors, e.g. large-scale thermo-chemical energy storage. The research tasks include both planning, leading and executing experimental work and subsequent data analysis with help of modeling. The experimental resources at hand include fluidized bed reactors equipped with advanced experimental diagnostic tools for solids and gases. The research will be performed in collaboration with senior researchers and PhD students and with the feedback from industrial partners. The project is funded by the Energy Area of Advance at Chalmers and is a collaboration between the Division of Energy Technology (where you will be employed) and the Division of Energy and Material at the Chemistry department (where you will conduct a large part of the work). These divisions have a long experience in the topics of chemical looping processes and of fluidization technology for large-scale thermo-chemical conversion. The divisions conduct research at different levels; experimental and modelling at reactor and process levels, process simulations of different energy and industrial processes and energy systems analysis of entire national and regional energy systems. The divisions have extensive cooperation with industry and governmental organizations and the results from the research are disseminated in the academic community and to different stakeholders in society. The topic of the post doc is in line with the goals and strategy of the divisions, among which is to maintain and strengthen its strong position as frontliner within research of metal redox cycles and fluidized bed technology.
