(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: 1-2 Postdoctoral researchers for studies in the field of mitochondrial genetics (scholarship)

Mutations of mtDNA cause mitochondrial diseases and are heavily implicated in age-associated disease and the normal ageing process. The postdoc positions will be focused on studies of how inherited and somatic mtDNA mutations in mammals impair oxidative phosphorylation to cause organ dysfunction. Mechanisms for purifying selection of mutated mtDNA in the maternal germline will also be studied. The group of Nils-Göran Larsson focuses on understanding molecular processes determining how mitochondrial dysfunction causes disease and ageing by using biochemistry, molecular biology and modern -omics approaches. In addition, advanced mouse models, including conditional knockout strains and strains with mtDNA mutations generated by gene editing, will be an important component of the project.

(24) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title: Postdoctoral studies in translational immunology focusing on lymphoma in the skin(scholarship)

We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the team of associate professor Hanna Brauner in focusing on finding novel pathogenic mechanisms and biomarkers for patients with cutaneous lymphoma. We have access to unique clinical material, including fresh patient material from the Dermatology clinic where Hanna Brauner is specialist in dermatology and responsible for patients with cutaneous lymphoma, which we will assess in a truly translational approach, applying cutting edge methods to understand key clinical questions. The team of Hanna Brauner has a net-work of national and international collaborators among both basic science researcher and clinical researchers and is associated to the research group of professor Marie Wahren Herlenius. Our main research interest is cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL), which is a rare and less studied type of lymphoma primarily engaging the skin. We recently published the first description of skin infiltration natural killer (NK) cells in patients with CTCL and found that they are increased in numbers and have an activity-impaired phenotype, partially driven by interactions with the tumor (Scheffschick et al, Front Immunol, 2023). The unique accessibility of CTCL allows for easy access to the tumor and the possibility to follow the development of the lymphoma and anti-lymphoma immune responses over time. Most of the patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma get an indolent disease, but for largely unknown reasons around 10-15% percent develop aggressive disease with high fatality. In these efforts our ultimate aims are to increase fundamental knowledge on the pathogenesis of cutaneous lymphoma and aid earlier identification of patients at risk of aggressive disease. We hope that findings from our studies will also be applicable for patients with other types of less accessible lymphoma subtypes.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website

The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.

The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.

The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.

The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.

Internationally, the university is known for research relating to the genome of the poplar tree and the Norway Spruce, and its highly ranked Institute of (industrial) Design.
