(01) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral Researcher in Computational Solid Mechanics

The research activities of the candidate will focus on the theoretical and computational analysis of lattice structures such as origami fold core sandwich structures within the theories of elasticityelasto-plasticity and elasto-plastic damage. Research activities will involve numerical methods relying on physics-based continuum models and validated via experiments. The applicability of data-based (but physics-informed) machine learning methods will form a branch of the study.

The teaching assistant duties of the position are limited to about ten percent of working hours and related to the Master’s Programme in Building Technology, such courses as Engineering Computation and Simulation, Finite Element Methods in Civil Engineering, Mechanics of Beam and Frame Structures, Mechanics of Plate and Shell Structures, Stability of Structures or Material Modeling in Civil Engineering. Possibilities for serving as an instructor for Bachelor’s and Master’s Thesis students are available as well.

Deadline : 15.6.2024

(04) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:–Doctoral Researcher position in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) related to Large eddy simulation (LES) of compressible two-phase flows

In order to produce green hydrogen, electrolyzers running with green electricity will be of significant importance. The materials used for e.g. anode and cathode within electrolyzers have been studied extensively while the fluid dynamical aspects of electrolyzers have not received much focus. Here, within the present proposal, we will use LES to characterize the flow field and H2 formation, related to bubble growth and transport, connected to the efficiency of the electrolyzer.

The project involves studies using LES in compressible, two-phase flows related to H2 production in an alkaline electrolyzer. The simulations will be mostly performed using the OpenFOAM open source software utilizing a radically fast finite rate chemistry accelerator developed at the host institution. Some previous experience in physics/mathematics related numerical simulations and high-performance computing will be considered particularly useful.

Deadline : 16th of June, 2024

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website

Aalto University  is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.

The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.
