(05) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:– PhD – Unlocking historical aerial image archive for understanding environmental changes

The PhD project intends to exploit the potential of historical aerial images acquired worldwide from the early 1920s until the 2000s. This data is a unique and untapped resource that provides the only evidence of the earth’s surface over the last century and can be used to create digital elevation models (DEMs) through photogrammetric processing if sufficient stereo coverage is available.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in using this data in the context of climate change and rapid human development. However, this data poses several challenges, such as distortion during digitisation, lack of metadata, and poor image quality, which can compromise the quality and success of photogrammetric processing. As a result, new pipelines have been developed to address these challenges and automate data processing.
The project aims to develop solutions to process historical aerial images to generate accurate elevation information. Exciting historical aerial images from the Trimetrogon flights over glacierised areas in Patagonia have been scanned and are available for use in the PhD project. Additional historical images will be purchased to exploit the potential of this data over other glacierised areas in the Chilean Andes and worldwide. Change detection analysis will subsequently be conducted to quantify glacier and proglacial changes in the observed area. This will include analysing DEMs from modern data acquired by very high-resolution airborne and satellite images. Apart from 3D surface reconstruction, historical images are a valuable source of information for detecting changes in land cover using orthorectified images. Further research could involve the development of artificial intelligence and deep learning solutions for image segmentation and quantifying land cover changes over time (e.g., Dahle et al., 2024).

PhD position summary/title:– PhD – Investigating Earth’s surface properties and their evolution using optical and radar observations

The PhD candidate will explore the potential of using remote sensing data from multiple sources and related applications in the field of cryosphere and forestry. The project aims to investigate surface properties, dynamics, and tracking changes over time by integrating multi-source remote sensing data. The project will rely on optical stereo images to derive elevation information and hyperspectral imagery from airborne and satellite observations to characterize the surface properties by analyzing hundreds of spectral bands. Additionally, radar satellite data from commercial and open-access missions will be processed and analyzed. The radar data analysis will include different approaches for surface change detection and surface displacement analysis. State-of-the-art algorithms will be applied, and new methods will be developed, considering local processing solutions and cloud computing infrastructures (e.g., Google Earth Engine or similar).

(12) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Researcher

The successful applicant will join the Swiss National Science Foundation-Ambizione research group “A War Without End? The Legacy of the Cold War in Russia” led by Dr. Vassily Klimentov. The supervisors of the PhD will be Prof. Dr. Jeronim Perovic, Dr. Vassily Klimentov, and Prof. Dr. Martin Dusinberre.

The “A War Without End” project, located at the intersection of history, sociology and international relations, explores the memory of the Cold War in Russia after the break-up of the Soviet Union and how it became formative of national identity. It examines how the assessment of the Cold War evolved from the Boris Yeltsin to the Vladimir Putin eras while it integrated collective memory and what role the memory of the Cold War has played in developing and supporting national narratives. It analyses how the Cold War has featured in Russian public discourse and society since 1992 and how Russian far-right, leftist, nationalist, liberal, Orthodox and other ideological groups and mnemonic communities such as Soviet-Afghan War veterans, former communist elites and victims of Soviet repressions have taken hold of the Cold War. In parallel, it examines these groups’ social prominence and influence on the Kremlin. It asks how understanding Russian elites’ complex relationship to the Cold War’s legacy helps make sense of Russia’s neo-imperial policies in Ukraine and elsewhere.
