(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–WISE post-doctoral position in Machine Learning for Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D-printing, has enabled not only a complete freedom-of-design of components, but also the development of alloys with new compositions and with tailored microstructures, potentially allowing for lower material and fuel usage in the case of light-weight alloys, and corrosion rates that are more adequate for use in temporary implants. However, process parameter development for AM is complex, time-consuming and very costly, including high amounts of material and energy waste, and even more so for particularly challenging alloys such as Mg-based ones, which require substantial research efforts. In this project we will develop machine learning models to i) enhance the efficiency of the process development, as well as to ii) develop a better understanding between process parameters and the resulting microstructure, as applied to Mg-based alloys. These alloys are promising for applications in the aerospace and transport industry, as well as biomaterials. The project focus will be on developing machine learning methods for AM that capture physical principles, for instance, through simulations.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral position in Energy materials physics, modelling of processes in solar cells

The postdoctoral position is placed in Ute Cappel’s research group, which focuses on the characterization of solar cell materials and on gaining understanding of the working mechanisms of different types of solar cells (e.g. perovskite, quantum dot). A particular focus is the combination of X-ray spectroscopies (specifically photoelectron spectroscopy) with time-resolved and operando measurements. Such methods can give insights into the dynamics and energetics of the photon-to-electron conversion process through measurements of energy alignment and electric fields between materials. Furthermore, the stability of solar cells can be studied.

We are looking for a candidate to work with theoretical modelling of our experimental results to support this work. This can include drift-diffusion models of electron and ion movement in device structures, which resemble those investigated with photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as other types of modelling. The successful candidate will become the expert of theoretical modelling in the research group; thus, this postdoc position will provide an excellent opportunity to develop an independent research platform. Furthermore, they will work alongside the experimental team and have the opportunity to carry out experiments at synchrotron radiation facilities.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral fellow in Medical Genetics

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the research group of Kerstin Lindblad-Toh, at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM), Uppsala University, Sweden. The research group, studies human and canine disease genetics including multiple different diseases as well as cancer. Specifically, for this project we utilize the dog to map modifier genes for canine degenerative myelopathy, the canine form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Once genes have been mapped in the dogs, we use this information to examine the same genes and pathways in humans with ALS. We utilize the evolutionary constraint from our 240 mammalian Zoonomia project to identify candidate functional mutations. The successful applicant will identify novel genes for canine and human ALS. He/she will also perform experimental follow-up including reporter assays and other molecular assays to better understand the identified mutations and the disease biology. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to be part of a team with an enthusiasm for science and a longstanding interest in genomics, comparative genetics and human disease. About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
