PhD position summary/title:–PhD Position – System-level integrated circuit design and modeling for scalable quantum computing architectures

We are working on scalable electronic architectures based on semiconductor spin quantum bits (qubits) to make the vision of a universal quantum computer reality. For scaling up the number of qubits into the millions, it is crucial to move parts of the control electronics closer to the qubits. To achieve this, we design and implement cryogenic integrated circuits for qubit control and readout in state-of-the-art CMOS technologies. Since qubits are extremely sensitive and operate in temperatures at low millikelvin levels, the requirements on power consumption, noise and area are severe. For this reason, it is necessary to develop new and groundbreaking architectures and circuit topologies. Modeling electronics and their interfaces to qubits in this challenging environment is an essential part of this.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position – Negative emissions through cost-optimal Direct Air Capture and Storage plant design

One essential step towards the ramp-up is the identification of site-specific optimal design of DACS plants, which will be the focus of the advertised PhD. To identify optimal DACS plant designs in terms of their techno-economic characteristics an optimization model is to be developed in the institutes’ inhouse modelling framework FINE (https://github.com/FZJ-IEK3-VSA/FINE) in addition to technical models allowing to assess technical scaling and an optimal operation. The optimal plant design is identified by considering the energy supply system, the choice of capture technology, the DAC-plant’s technical design, the DAC-plant’s operational concept and the positioning of the DAC-plant with regards to the storage site and needed transportation effort. Your tasks in detail:

  • Development of a modelling structure for representing the DACS-system in the FINE-Framework
  • Detailed model of DAC technologies including their technical design and scaling effects
  • Parameterization and design of the energy supply system for providing electricity (and heat/cooling) for the DAC plant
  • Detailed model for DAC operation with respect to fluctuating energy supply and climatic conditions
  • Model for assessing the positioning of the DAC-plant with regards to the storage site and needed transportation
  • Development of appropriate scenarios to test the DACS-plant design and to obtain robust recommendations regarding the overall design

PhD position summary/title:– PhD position- Power system monitoring and quantum communication

Maintaining an efficient, sustainable, and stable energy supply requires integrating various technologies, which poses complex challenges for modern energy systems. In particular, given the limited observability of the energy systems, advanced monitoring solutions are needed to observe the behaviour of the entire system, in order to provide reliable data for system monitoring and control.
In this framework, Quantum key distribution (QKD), thanks to the cryptographic protocol, can play a key role in ensuring safe communication between the monitoring devices and the control room.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position – Replacing lost material flows within the energy transition

The energy transition not only generates new demand for materials, but also phase out material flows such as gypsum production in coal-fired power plants. These lost material flows must be suitably replaced. To ensure that this replacement is compatible with the energy transition, substitution options must be systematically investigated with the help of energy scenarios. Therefore, this doctoral thesis will identify the phased out material flows and substitution options and integrate them into the institute`s own energy system model ETHOS.FINE ( https://github.com/FZJ-IEK3-VSA/FINE ) in order to find transformation scenarios without material gaps.

PhD position summary/title:–PhD Position – DFG Priority Program Fluorescence Measurements from Drones

Our team at the research center has developed a camera system for measuring sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) that is compact enough for use on drones (UAVs). SIF makes it possible to measure the productivity of plants more directly than with other remote sensing methods. This results in exciting applications, such as monitoring water stress in plants. The SIF signal itself is a weak signal that requires precise sensors and measurement protocols for reliable measurements. The aim of this project is to enable spatial high-resolution, quantitative UAV-SIF measurements with known measurement uncertainty.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position – Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance

If you are interested in creative problem solving at the interface between chemistry and physics, with the chance to mix hands-on experimental work with theory+simulations, this opportunity may be for you!

The Hyperpolarization Methods research group at the Institute for Structural Biochemistry is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to carry out research in the field of hyperpolarized magnetic resonance. Hyperpolarization is the preparation of molecules in a specific nuclear spin quantum state. This means the molecule’s NMR/MRI signals are enhanced by many orders of magnitude, which is transformative for applications such as medical MRI or chemosensing. Specifically, we develop novel chemical and physical methods to produce hyperpolarized molecules, and to extend the lifetimes of those hyperpolarized states.

As a member of the research group, you will work in an environment that combines the best aspects of modern scientific research with traditional academic values. You will carry out fast-paced research on societally-relevant topics, with individual support (especially for your personal well-being) so you can grow as an individual. At the same time, you will have ample opportunity for acquiring knowledge, discussing science, and thinking creatively.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position – Analysis of Redox Interaction of Glass Composite Sealants for Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC)

Hydrogen is seen worldwide as a crucial building block for the transformation towards a sustainable and greenhouse-gas-neutral energy system. Electrolysis is the best-known and most relevant option for the sustainable and efficient production of hydrogen. SOEC electrolysis is in the focus of current research. An essential component of an SOEC is the sealing of the gas feeds with a sealing material. This material must be chemically inert at high temperatures, stable under long-term operating conditions while also having an optimised coefficient of thermal expersion of the ceramic cell material and the metallic housing. Glass-ceramic composite sealants are state of the art and fulfill these requirements. During operation of the SOEC, redox reactions were observed in which zinc drops precipitat from the sealing material. These are disadvantageous for the thermomechanical stability and the electrical insulation properties of the joint.

PhD position summary/title:– PhD Position – Modelling of Superconducting Qubit Circuits with Machine Learning Techniques

Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) provides insights into the behavior of superconducting qubit circuits with a few qubits, but scaling up the number of qubits presents significant challenges. As the qubit count increases, modeling accuracy diminishes, often resulting in experimental gate and processor performances that rely on imprecise simulations.

  • Our objective is to refine the model for greater precision and, using this improved model, to identify optimized parameter regimes through extensive machine learning.
  • We collaborate closely with leading experimental teams across Europe to simulate their devices.
  • This collaboration necessitates prompt scientific communication with experimentalists, developing models based on actual devices, and exploring avenues to enhance performance.
  • The work will involve extensive use of numerical and analytical techniques pioneered by our group. We are seeking an applicant with a robust background and experience in machine learning and quantum computing to contribute meaningfully to this project.
