Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in Comparative Political Economy of Labour Market Risks and Welfare State Transformations

A consortium of 10 European universities and other research institutions has received funding from the European Commission (Horizon Europe) for a large-scale, multi-disciplinary research project on the future world of work and social protection in Europe. TransEuroWorkS provides a new and more integrative understanding of how fundamental changes in the labour market and European context can be managed through national and European Union (EU)-level social protection. At the center of this research are three structural labour market transformations, i.e., the green transition, digitalisation, and the internationalisation of the workforce (through intra-European mobility and immigration). Leiden University is the coordination team of the TransEuroWorkS project. The selected post-doc will be involved in multiple roles, such as doing research, collaborating with consortium partners, engaging stakeholders, and coordinating the project.

Deadline :2 September 2024

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Researcher in the project “Do we owe anything to ourselves?”

The question whether we have obligations to ourselves is an old one. Indeed, doubt has long been raised about the possibility of duties to the self, that is, duties requiring such things as self-respect, self-improvement, self-care, standing up for oneself and self-cognition. A key objection is the paradox of self-release. Marcus Singer’s well-known spin on the paradox argues that the notion of a duty to oneself is internally incoherent: having such duties would amount to having duties from which one could always release oneself. Despite this objection, obligations to oneself have come back in fashion. Immanuel Kant was a proponent of duties to oneself and even criticized his predecessors for failing to fully acknowledge their significance. This project aims to examine whether we still owe something to ourselves by combining the insights of the ongoing debate on duties to oneself, Kant’s views on such duties, and the relevant conceptions in the literature on contemporary moral psychology.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc Three-dimensional simulation models of plant tissue mechanobiology (1.0 FTE for three years)

The opening is for a research position within the field of computational science, mathematical or theoretical biology, computational physics, or applied mathematics. This Postdoc project is part of the Gravitation programme GreenTE (Green Tissue Engineering), a multidisciplinary consortium of 7 Dutch universities. Together, GreenTE will unravel how plants sense and respond to mechanical stimuli. These fundamental insights will be the basis to develop engineering interventions to improve plant regeneration, seed longevity and defenses against disease. The successful applicant will be an integral member of the GreenTE community, which offers an open, diverse and inspiring environment to engage in multidisciplinary mechanobiology research at the intersection of biology, chemistry and physics, and is expected to participate in GreenTE events, training and collaborations.

Deadline : 8 September 2024

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–  Postdoctoral research position in Quantifying Environmental Impacts of Future AEC Resource Scenarios

Are you a curious scientist, wanting to bridge IE systems analysis with applications in built environment sustainability?

Does combining IE models with AEC innovations, to transform building practices towards waste-sourced and fast-growing biobased materials pique your interest?

Do you have experience with prospective lifecycle assessment (pLCA) and/or dynamic material flow analysis (dMFA) or want to learn and apply these approaches in building systems to help decarbonise our built environment?

If so, the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) at Leiden University is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with experience and an affinity with applying IE modelling methods to study questions relating to decarbonising our built environment. We are particularly interested in candidates familiar with pLCA , dMFA and if possible (but not required) biobased building materials.

Deadline : 4 September 2024

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc: Reactive scattering with electronic friction

The project revolves around recent work in Jörg Meyer’s group on non-adiabatic effects on reactive scattering of small molecules on metal surfaces [1-3]. Even in the weakly non-adiabatic regime, electron-hole pair excitations in the metal surface can have a pronounced effect on the dissociative chemisorption probabilities depending on how electronic friction coefficients are determined [1,2]. In this project, these insights are to be extended towards other incident conditions, i.e., mainly higher incidence energies, which requires the development and implementation of a new machine-learning model to represent the tensorial electronic friction coefficients of (diatomic) molecules. Despite of its very fundamental scientific character this work is of interest to a large industrial partner with whom we have established an extensive collaboration. It is going to be embedded in our team of theoretical and computational both chemists and physicists in the Theoretical Chemistry group, providing opportunities to learn from each other and a lot of potential for collaboration(s). Thanks to our access to considerable computational resources both in house and at the national level, computing time is not expected to be a bottle neck.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoc in Structures and Homotopy in Optimisation

The Theory cluster at the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) is seeking candidates for a postdoc (1.0 FTE) position, working on category theoretical abstractions of optimisation theory and algorithms, and on higher categories for homotopy optimisation.
Optimisation is central to modern computing, but conventional representations with explicit indices and the focus on individual tensors, functions, etc. hinders the understanding fundamental aspects of optimisation processes. The aim of this project is to develop abstract and compositional reasoning techniques for properties of optimisation processes using category theory, and to advance the homotopy optimisation method using higher category theory. Homotopy optimisation can be used to find more efficient optimisation algorithms, to couple optimisation with experimental and other parameters to avoid convergence to local minima or learning of paths between optima. This is an exciting direction in optimisation, which crucially needs structural techniques to further its development.

About Leiden University, Netherlands : Official Website

Leiden University (abbreviated as LEI;Dutch: Universiteit Leiden) is a public research university in Leiden, Netherlands. It was founded as a Protestant university in 1575 by William, Prince of Orange, making it the oldest institution of higher education in the Netherlands.

Known for its historic foundations and emphasis on the social sciences, the university came into particular prominence during the Dutch Golden Age, when scholars from around Europe were attracted to the Dutch Republic due to its climate of intellectual tolerance. During this time, Leiden became the home to individuals such as René Descartes, Rembrandt, Christiaan Huygens, Hugo Grotius, Baruch Spinoza, and Baron d’Holbach.

The university has seven academic faculties and over fifty subject departments, housing more than forty national and international research institutes. Its historical primary campus consists of buildings in multiple places in the college town of Leiden, while a second campus located in The Hague houses a liberal arts college (Leiden University College The Hague) and several of its faculties. It is a member of the Coimbra Group, the Europaeum, and a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.

The university has produced twenty-six Spinoza Prize Laureates and sixteen Nobel Laureates. Members of the Dutch royal family such as Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix, and King Willem-Alexander are alumni, and ten prime ministers of the Netherlands including incumbent Mark Rutte. US President John Quincy Adams also studied at the university.
