(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral researcher in Structural Immunology

The project aims to tackle the rules of antigen recognition by γδT cells. Of the three classes of lymphocytes that constitute the adaptive immune system of jawed vertebrates, γδT cells are the only class for which principles of antigen recognition remain enigmatic and the nature of the antigens is largely elusive. Screens performed by the Kreslavsky lab have recently identified several novel unexpected γδT cell receptor (γδTCR) ligands (see link for further details). In this project, we will combine immunological expertise of the Kreslavsky lab with the structural biology expertise of the Rorbach lab to solve structures of γδTCRs with their unusual ligands. This in turn will shed light on the rules of antigen recognition of these mysterious cells, and through that – on their functions in immune responses against pathogens and cancer cells.

(17) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (4) Dietary nitrate and physical exercise to prevent cardiovascular disease in diabetes

Physical exercise and dietary improvements are key non-pharmacological strategies for metabolic syndrome and diabetes. These lifestyle changes reduce chronic oxidative stress and increase nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. Our research focuses on inorganic nitrate, found in green leafy vegetables and beetroot, which converts to bioactive NO. Studies show nitrate improves cardiovascular function, reducing blood pressure, improving vascular function, and enhancing exercise parameters like mitochondrial efficiency and oxygen utilization. We hypothesize that dietary inorganic nitrate combined with physical exercise will provide significant cardiovascular protection for T2D patients, who are at high risk for CVD. This clinical trial will study the combined effects of structured physical exercise and dietary nitrate supplementation on cardiovascular health in T2D patients.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (6) Signal transducers regulating glucose transport in type 2 diabetes

The Integrative Physiology research group at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at Karolinska Institutet is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the group of Professor Juleen R. Zierath. The research in the group is focused on translational studies on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and the effects of physical activity on glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle.

This project is designed to test the role of signal transducers to improve glucose homeostasis by targeting skeletal muscle glucose transport. The candidate will explore the molecular signal transducers involved in the regulation of glucose transport to restore glucose uptake in skeletal muscle from people with type 2 diabetes. The team has identified several candidates that may play a direct role in glucose transport. The postdoctoral fellow will validate the role of novel signal transducers in the regulation of glucose transport and insulin sensitivity using knock-down and over-expression approaches in primary human skeletal muscle cells. Promising candidates will be further validated in in vivo models of type 2 diabetes through electroporation approaches.

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (3) Long non-coding RNAs regulation of the insulin response in fat cells

The postdoctoral fellow will determine how disease-relevant long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulate adipocyte insulin sensitivity and in turn metabolic health. This will be achieved by investigating human white adipose tissue (WAT) biopsies taken before and after systemic insulin infusion and couple these findings with state-of-the-art cellular models and in-house developed molecular approaches. This project aims to understand how lncRNAs contribute to the insulin response in adipocytes and discover novel targets that can be approached therapeutically. (20) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:– Postdoctoral Researcher/The Strategic Research Programme for Diabetes (5) Spatially resolving the response to anti-hyperglycemic drugs in adipose tissue

Increased white adipose tissue mass is linked to type 2 diabetes, which in turn can be treated with several different anti-hyperglycemic drugs. However, there are large interindividual variations in the efficacy and side-effects of these interventions. We hypothesize that distinct adipocyte subtypes determine insulin sensitivity and outcomes following interventions with anti-hyperglycemic drugs. This project will test our model by spatially resolving treatment responses in human WAT based on samples from a clinical trial called DIASPAX (NCT05501483). In the study, we obtain adipose tissue biopsies, which we will use to generate single-nucleus RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomic data. By jointly analyzing these data together with functional assessment of the tissue and assessments of clinical phenotypes, we will for the first-time link white adipose tissue heterogeneity to treatment responses. We are now looking for an ambitious postdoctoral fellow that will perform single-nucleus RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomic analyses. The work will be undertaken in collaboration with other experts within the group as well as with members of the lab of Patrik Ståhl at SciLifeLab. There will be possibilities to follow-up key findings with wet lab experiments using state-of-the-art methods.
