The Digital History Advanced Research Projects Accelerator (DHARPA) at C²DH is looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher as part of an ongoing project sponsored by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). The postdoctoral researcher will join an existing project team that includes two other postdoctoral researchers, three software developers, three PhD students, and an administrative assistant, along with principal investigator Sean Takats. As the project’s latest postdoctoral researcher, you will be primarily involved in outreach, working with the rest of the team to roll out the first public version of their new research software, as well as working on your own research project. This is a fully funded position with an original duration of 2 years with a possibility to extend up to 5 years upon the performance and funding availability. The successful candidate is expected to develop safe and robust machine learning-based solutions for multilayer Ground-Air-Space 6G networks. The design strategies will be optimized for 1) Distributed RAN resource allocation, 2) 3D mobility management and routing and 3) risk minimization to guarantee constraints in dynamic topology of multilayer 6G environment.

The Developmental and Cellular Biology Group (led by Prof. Jens Schwamborn) at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine utilizes human stem cells for modeling and experimental treatment of neurodegenerative disease. Projects in the lab are at the interface of systems biology and bio-medical research. In particular, we aim on developing novel, complex in vitro models that are specific for the human brain. Our main disease model is Parkinson’s disease.

In this particular project, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who is interested in using patient specific induced pluripotent stem cells for the generation of brain organoid and assembloid models for investigating Parkinson’s disease.

The successful candidates are expected to perform the following tasks:

• Work on project-relevant subjects from the last and current Release of the 3GPP radio access and/or core network standards, implement the features in MATLAB and/or OpenAirInterface software for computer simulations, and conduct theoretical research to submit proposals to the ongoing study or work items, with a view towards patenting and possible inclusion into the future Releases.

The objective of the SEaSons project is to investigate how different occupational groups imagine sustainable futures. In European latitudes, our assumption is that climate issues are experienced through the seasons and their relevance for food, transport, housing and energy. The study sets out with a qualitative study with a group of people we call ‘technical experts’, de facto stewards of sustainable climate action. At the same time their knowledge is – to varying degrees – marginal in the common discourses on transition politics and behavioral change. To reconstruct this knowledge, we will employ an innovative visual methodology combined with an interview methodology. Using pictures which refer to the everyday practices of our technical experts will allow us to bring into appearance their tacit and technical knowledge. The qualitative study will be complemented by a quantitative survey. The research has three goals: first, it seeks to identify the knowledge of technical experts, potential barriers to and drivers of sustainable action. Secondly, we want to develop participatory tools to allow different publics to engage with knowledge of sustainability. Thirdly, the study contributes to sociological research on the perceptions of the future concerning climate issues.

The postdoctoral researcher will be working under the supervision of Professor Niovi Vavoula. In particular, the Postdoctoral Researcher will be in charge of:

• Conduct research and contributing to other activities falling into the scope of the research projects, in particular: drafting research papers, prepare the scientific materials of project meetings; contributing to project events’ organisation
• Conduct own research in the related topics and publication of articles in scientific reviews and contributions to conferences
• Assist with teaching activities, one to three hours a week and contribute to tutoring students

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will develop and implement federated analytical workflows tailored for health research. You will apply AI/ML algorithms to analyse a diverse range of data types, including clinical, molecular (-omics), and (sensor/mobile and PROMs/PREMs) within a federated environment. Additionally, you will innovate state-of-the-art federated AI/ML methods, to ensure privacy and data security in clinical research. To augment federated analysis, you will be generating synthetic data using ML techniques, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The project “PHysics- and data-driven multiscale modeling design of layered lead halide perovskiTe mAterials for Stable phoTovoltaICs” (PHANTASTIC) joins the efforts and competence of five scientific groups from the Université de Mons (Belgium), INSA of Rennes (France), Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Israel), Technical University of Dresden (Germany), and the University of Luxemburg (Luxemburg). The global aim is to improve the long-term stability of 3D lead halide perovskites, the main limiting factor for the broad application of the material in industry.

The role of the TCP group, led by Prof. Alexandre Tkatchenko from the University of Luxemburg, is to develop reliable, efficient, and accurate machine learning force fields (MLFF) for molecular dynamics simulation of systems sizes ranging from ~1000 to 100.000 atoms while preserving the predictive power of first-principles modeling. Moreover, such simulations should correctly reproduce the formation and propagation of defects. This is a must-have requirement for any MLFF used to improve the stability of any material in general and 3D lead halide perovskites in particular. The novel equivariant MLFFs will be used with state-of-the-art training and sampling approaches, efficient DFT calculations, and recent developments in vdW methods to achieve this goal. These push the project to the frontiers of modern MLFF capabilities, making it challenging, engaging, and impactful.

The research group focuses on wireless/satellite communications and networking and is headed by Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas. The research areas focus on the formulation, modeling, design, and analysis of future 5G and beyond communication networks that are capable of supporting new services in a cost-efficient manner. Use cases of interest include IoT verticals, unmanned aerial vehicles, integrated satellite-space-terrestrial networks, quantum communications and key distribution, spectrum management and coexistence, tactile Internet, and autonomous transportation. A two-year postdoctoral position in engineering is available at the Chair for ‘Urban Water Management’ (Prof. Dr. Joachim Hansen), Department of Engineering. This is a fully funded position for 23 months within a large, national research project (INSTRUCT – INtegrated Satellite-TeRrestrial Systems for Ubiquitous Beyond 5G CommunicaTions). You will, in collaboration with our project partner at EMBL-EBI, hosting and maintaining the MGnify pipeline, mature the software stack to enable easy deployment within MGnify pipelines. This will lead to computational solutions which will be applied to relevant datasets to establish a baseline of the prevalence and abundance of these microbiome-derived genes and to compare these aspects, thereby resolving the microbiome-borne pathogenic potential in a variety of diseases. The UNITE project (UNified framework of faulT identification) aims at integrating the prediction and localization of faults in a continuously evolving software system as pre- and post-fault identification activities. The project involves analyzing the co-evolution of code elements and tests, leveraging these co-evolutionary relationships as a bridge between past and present fault identification activities to construct a unified fault identification framework.
