(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Research Fellow

Two research fellow positions are available in the laboratory of Professor Mark Harris, funded by a Wellcome Discovery Award.  We recently made the exciting discovery of a role for the kinase PKR and the down-stream transcription factor IRF1 in inducing expression of proteins that block virus assembly (DOI: 10.1371/journal.ppat.1010812), uncovering a hitherto unrecognised aspect of innate antiviral immunity.  These positions will focus on identifying and characterising these novel antiviral effectors, initially using hepatitis C virus as a model system, but also evaluating effects on other pathogenic viruses such as Chikungunya virus and SARS-CoV-2.  The project will initially involve transcriptomic analysis to identify genes regulated by PKR/IRF1, followed by investigation of their potential role in blocking assembly of infectious virus particles. The positions provide an opportunity to conduct ground-breaking research into the host response to virus infection and would suit individuals who have experience in working with pathogenic viruses in high containment, working with RNA and proven ability to generate and interpret ‘omics data.  The successful applicants will join a large, interdisciplinary laboratory shared between multiple investigators and working on a range of viruses.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Research Assistant in Characterisation of the Mineral Polyhalite

Do you have a background in chemical science and engineering, and industrial research experience, with knowledge in the crystallography and particle technology aspects associated with the processing and performance of inorganic materials, then this position will interest you.

Polyhalite is an evaporite mineral, specifically a hydrated ternary sulfate of potassium, calcium and magnesium with formula: K2Ca2Mg(SO4)4·2H2O. It is an important commodity chemical feedstock, with particular utility as a low chloride containing fertiliser. The only polyhalite currently being mined in the world comes from below the North Yorkshire National Park which extends off the North Sea coast in the UK. Polyhalite is the first natural potassium bearing mineral to be utilised at scale, for crop production in 75 years.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Research Fellow

We wish to recruit a Research Fellow to manage and work on a new project called Impact of an Intervention on Inequalities in Overprescribing – the 3i-o study. The project is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research through its Health and Social Care Delivery Research programme. The project aims to evaluate the impact, implementation and sustainability of audit and feedback on health inequalities in prescribing in general practice.

The Research Fellow will play a vital role in this research project aimed at understanding clinician and patient perspectives on optimising prescribing in general practice. The project seeks to explore beliefs regarding ethical, economic, and clinical challenges and benefits associated with reducing prescribing, particularly focusing on clinicians’ everyday practices and the specific needs of their practice populations. The Researcher, with support from the Work Package lead and another Research Fellow, will employ semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations utilising the Listening Method to gather insights into clinician and patient perceptions and behaviours related to prescribing, patient demographics, available services, and contextual factors affecting prescribing decisions.
