An exciting opportunity exists for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow skilled in advanced transmission electron microscopy characterisation. This position is for a 3-year appointment and will look to further develop advanced transmission electron microscopy imaging methods for electrocatalyst and membrane materials in carbon dioxide electrolysers. The purpose of this work is to build a better understanding of the structure-property relationships in carbon dioxide electrolysers to allow for improved material design.

This position is part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence, Green Electrochemical Transformation of Carbon Dioxide (GETCO2). GETCO2 is a national research Centre which is administered by the University of Queensland (UQ) and has Nodes at the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Monash University, RMIT, Griffith University and University of Adelaide.

Synthetic biology is characterised by a cyclic workflow based on the design, build, test, learn paradigm. The emergence of genome-foundries allows for the rapid, but still costly, generation of large numbers of engineered strains. The University of Queensland is establishing a complementary facility to genome-foundries, the Integrated Design Environment for Advanced biomanufacturing (IDEA bio, https://www.ideabio.org.au/). This facility will consist of a TEST capability that allows for a deep phenomic characterisation of mutant strains, in partnership with Queensland Metabolomics and Proteomics (Q MAP https://www.qmap.org.au/) and the Australian Genome Foundry (Macquarie University), as well as a LEARN capability that seeks to learn from large ‘omics data sets and direct strain optimisation, pathway optimisation and metabolic engineering to advance synthetic biology efforts in Australia.

The project will explore the molecular basis of immunity to infection, inter-individual immune variation, and vaccine responsiveness using samples from human experimental infection models, vaccination, or clinical settings. The primary focus of the research is to accelerate the development of immunotherapeutics, vaccines and diagnostics against chronic infectious diseases as well as other autoimmune or neurodegenerative diseases caused by infectious agents, using systems immunology as a platform. It will provide an opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge advances spanning diverse fields of immunology and functional genomics, including single-call and spatial transcriptomics. The work will complement ongoing systems-based and therapeutic development efforts at UQ directed at infectious and chronic disease and is anticipated to have broad application to many disease targets.
