(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral position for research in antenna design for e-textiles

We recently explored the design of garments embedded with sensing filaments to monitor movement and health. We developed strain-, capacitive- and inductive-based filaments and validated they can be used to reconstruct biomechanics as well as capture bio-signals such as respiration rate. Your role will be to take these preliminary results, add your inventive contribution and develop innovative textile-based technology to revolutionize personalized training and medicine.

In a recent publication of ours (Galli, V, Sailapu, SK, Ahmadizadeh, C, Hannigan, B, Cuthbert, T, Menon, C (2023) Passive and Wireless All-Textile Wearable Sensor System, Advanced Science, No. 2206665) we explored the possibility of collecting data from a smartphone from a textile embedded with a textile-based capacitive sensor and no rigid integrated circuits. A key aspect of that work was to configure the wireless communication, including embedding the garment with an inductive coil, designing a frequency reader, and handling data transmission. The next step of the research is to wirelessly read multiple sensors simultaneously and ideally communicate with a smartphone when it is not in contact with the garment (no battery on the garment). We are striving for a solution that is highly innovative and, at the same time, very practical for the user.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc position in experimentally guided computational neuroscience

Creating realistic computational models of biological neural networks is among the most difficult challenges of neuroscience. However, such models could be extremely useful both in uderstanding how the brain processes and stores information, and also for reducing the vast parameter space of experimental efforts.

At LBB, we have the technology to build well-defined, in vitro networks of living neurons, and interact with them using microelectrode arrays. This provides us with a large amount of highly reproducible data that can be used to validate computational models.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoctoral position – Environmental assessment of circular economy strategies in the Swiss building stock

The construction industry is a significant consumer of natural resources that generates billions tons of waste annually and contributes to nearly 40% of climate change impacts. In Switzerland, with 1.8 million residential buildings and 4.7 million dwellings, future demolitions represent an opportunity to utilize secondary resources and mitigate the environmental footprint of the construction sector. To harness this potential, there is a need to identify the most effective circular economy strategies. This research aims to address this gap by developing tools for comparing prospective scenarios in the evolution of the Swiss building stock, thereby informing policy decisions to promote more sustainable construction practices. It is part of an interdisciplinary and international research programme that seeks to address the worldwide circumstances of rapid urbanization.

Postdoc  summary/title:–Postdoc position – Protein Structural Bioinformatics

Proteins are the key effectors of the cell and studying their structure can help understand their function, evolution and facilitate the development of novel therapies. Over the past few years there have been exciting developments in computational methods to predict protein structure from sequence and for the rational design of proteins with specific structural properties. Our group, in collaboration with others, has been making use of these methods to study their applications and limitations in diverse areas of structural bioinformatics (Akmed et al. NSMB 2022). We have applied AlphaFold2 in large scale to predict structures of human protein-protein interactions (Burke et al. NSMB 2023), work we have continued to expand upon. More recently, we have also made use of predicted structures across the protein universe to study protein evolution based on structural comparisons on a unprecedented scale (Barrio-Hernandez et al. Nature 2023). We are inviting applications from scientists with a background in structural bioinformatics to work on areas of shared interest with the group.
